How Do You Apply For Disability from Social Security? In Person, By Telephone, or Online

You can apply for disability by calling Social Security's "800" number: 1-800-772-1213. Usually, they will take some basic information and make an appointment for you with a local office.

You may apply in person in Massachusetts for social security disability at:

In Franklin County, Massachusetts, call the Greenfield office at: (413) 774-6031 or visit them in person at: 1 Arch Place, to apply for disability (either SSI or SSDI).

In Hampshire County, Massachusetts call the Holyoke office at (413) 563-3649. (or visit in person).

To apply online for:

Tip: I do NOT recommend completing the application on line. The questions need detailed answers. Print out the forms and take you time answering them.

If you get to look at the forms in advance (either by phone or in person) you can answer them carefully and fully. If I am hired by a client before her initial application, I ask her to call and tell SSA she wants to apply and have the forms sent. She can think about the questions. Then, we sit down together to answer them. Social Security forms to apply for disability may be found here: General SSA forms.
